Honda's frugal Earth Dreams engine technology is already available in the form of the Civic Hatch Diesel, but according to the Japanese automaker's executive vide president an even larger roll-out of Earth Dreams tech could come to the Civic by 2015.
And it will come in the form of a direct-injected petrol four-cylinder, most likely a 1.8 litre with 110kW and 180Nm. That engine will likely replace the current 1.8 in the Civic sedan and hatch, which produces 104kW and 174Nm.
Although the difference in output between the two 1.8s is not that dramatic, the fuel efficiency gains should be more than noticeable.
The Earth Dreams engine features a lot more technological sophistication in its double overhead cam valvetrain and direct injection fuel system, which allows it to extract more power from each drop of fuel compared against the current Civic's single overhead cam port-injected 1.8.
