Holden design exhibition now open in Melbourne

Some of Australia's most significant cars and their designers are being honoured in a free exhibition in Melbourne.

A new exhibition has opened in Melbourne showcasing more than half a century of work from Holden's Port Melbourne design studio.

Dream Factory: GMH Design at Fishermans Bend 1964 – 2020 exhibits sketches from nine prominent Holden designers, as well as photos, models, film, and other rarely-seen items.

The Fishermans Bend Technical Centre was one of only three General Motors studios in the world, with one located at GM's headquarters in Detroit, USA, and the other in Russelsheim am Main, Germany.

Both the Australian and German Technical Centres opened on the same day in 1964, with the public allowed to roam the halls freely – the only day the studios were ever open to the public.

Visitors to the exhibition will see some of the most significant Holden vehicles in its history, including the Monaro, Torana, and Commodore, as well as having the opportunity to see commissioned art piece Dream my Monaro by ceramicist Jia Jia Chen.

Curated by historian and Emeritus Professor in the School of Architecture and urban Design at RMIT, Dream Factory is open weekdays until 31 August 2021 at the City Gallery, Melbourne Town Hall, and is free of charge.
