Glickenhaus SCG 010 Zero: Hydrogen off-road ute earmarked by US-manufacturer

The hydrogen-powered off-roader will reportedly be based on the existing 6.2-litre supercharged V8 SCG Boot.

Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus – a United States-based exotic car manufacturer – is reportedly developing a hydrogen fuel cell all-terrain ute known as the SCG 010 Zero.

The vehicle will reportedly be based on the brand’s existing petrol-powered SCG Boot (shown below), which beat the Ford Bronco in 2019 and 2020 at the iconic Baja 1000 in Mexico.

Inspired by Steve McQueen’s legendary Baja Boot, the current petrol-powered Glickenhaus off-roader develops 485kW from its 6.2-litre supercharged V8 powerplant.

In a recent Instagram post it was claimed the upcoming hydrogen ute would take just five minutes to refuel and have a range in excess of 1600km.

However, Glickenhaus does have a history of promising big and underdelivering – in mid-2020 the brand announced its intention to build a supercar-based dune buggy kit car, however, after some initial hype, the project appears to have gone cold.

If the new ute does go into production, it’s unlikely to come cheap. The existing V8 variant is priced in the USA from US$287,500 (AU$375,000), and it's safe to assume a hydrogen fuel cell variant would be significantly more expensive to manufacture.

The similarly-sized GMC Hummer EV and Tesla Cybertruck – both of which draw voltage from traditional lithium-ion batteries – are slated for mass-production this year, with promised pricing from US$112,595 (AU$147,000) and US$39,900 (AU$52,000) respectively.

The first Rivian R1T deliveries are also expected to begin this year, priced from US$77,500 (AU$101,000).

Controversial start-up Nikola Motors was, at one point, looking to join the zero-emission pick-up fray with its hydrogen-powered Badger in 2022, however these plans appear to have fallen to the wayside.
