Ford releases Mustang Mach E drift video
A video of a Ford Mustang Mach E drifting and doing burnouts has been created in an attempt to silence critics who believe the famous badge should never have appeared on an electric SUV.
The highly-modified vehicle is far from a showroom version, with wider bodywork, massive wings, and racing rubber – and noisy high-output electric motors.
It turns out the monster Mustang Mach E is powered by seven electric motors with a bonkers claimed output of 1400hp (more than 1000kW). Four motors are attached to the rear axle and three are mounted up front. No wonder there's a bit of whine.
The video released by Ford Performance overnight features some of the blue oval brand’s biggest motorsport stars, including Gymkhana Hoonigan Ken Block, drift king Vaughn Gittin Junior, fellow drift racer Chelsea Denofa, rally and off-road ace turned Nascar pilot Hailie Deegan, and Team Penske Nascar racer Joey Logano.
All five drivers line up – Vaughn Gittin Junior gets the keys to the Mustang Mach E – and perform similar stunts to what you might expect from a real Ken Block video.
It’s the corporate world’s idea of what car enthusiasts want in a viral video, but unfortunately Ford executives laid it on a bit thick in parts.
Towards the end of the video, Ken Block and Vaughn Gittin Junior do donuts around a showroom version of the Ford Mustang Mach E – just in case you didn’t realise this was an advertisement for the Mach E.
At least the video solves the mystery surrounding recent footage of a stripped out Ford Mustang Mach E. It’s now apparent it was doing a shakedown run before this promotional video, although that shaky 'spy' footage itself was likely part of a marketing plan to build anticipation.
It’s unclear if there are any further plans for the Mustang Mach E drift car, but here’s hoping Ford throws the keys to Ken Block for a proper instalment of the Gymkhana Hoonigan series.
