Ford developing electric cars based on Volkswagen tech – report

The alliance between Ford and Volkswagen grows, with more passenger cars said to be on the way.

Ford has confirmed it is working on a second battery-powered passenger vehicle, based on Volkswagen underpinnings.

According to the UK's Autocar, a new electric model is in the works from Ford, using 'MEB' architecture from Volkswagen.

The vehicle will join a small SUV, set to be released in 2023, which is being referred to as a miniature version of the Mustang Mach-E.

Ford of Europe boss Stuart Rowley confirmed the new car during the Financial Times Future of the Car summit.

"The mid-sized vehicle segment in Europe is very important, and there Volkswagen has a lot more scale than Ford, so it makes sense [to use MEB]" Mr Rowley said.

The unknown electric model will sit alongside three other collaborative projects between Ford and Volkswagen: the Ford Transit Connect panel van, the Ford Transit Custom van, and the Volkswagen Amarok ute.

While the Transit Connect and Transit Custom are based on the Volkswagen Caddy and Transporter respectively, the Volkswagen Amarok will be based on the new-generation Ford Ranger.

"Our alliance isn't meant to be capped or defined, and we’re going to look for opportunities to work together for mutual benefit where it makes sense for both companies."
