Ford Bronco could get canvas roll-top roof
Ford's accessories team is gunning for the huge array of parts offered on Jeep's long-running Wrangler with its Bronco, including this cool roll-top.
It looks like Ford is preparing a canvas roll-top roof for the upcoming Bronco SUV, potentially with the ability to act as a canvas awning.
Patent drawings uncovered by Automobile Magazine reveal the roll-top is far smarter than it appears in pictures. The filing contains mention of two canvas layers: one a full-on roof, the other a mesh-style covering.
That would suggest owners will be able to run with the roof up, a milder mesh shield to keep some of the elements out, or a full-on roofless experience. It looks like both are stored in a removable, retractable housing similar to those used on wagon luggage covers.
Cooler than that, though, is the potential for the roof to act as a kind of awning when the car is stopped. One of the filing images shows the roof pulled back, protruding from the rear of the car like the fold-out awnings common on caravans.
It's secured with stakes, although where they'd be stored isn't clear.
The patent filing follows on from a report confirming the car will have removable doors and a removable roof.
