Electric Hyundai Kona confirmed

South Korean brand pumps up its green credentials.

Hyundai is riding the lightning as it boosts its green-car line-up.

The South Korean car maker has announced that it will unveil a fully-electric version of its Kona city SUV at the upcoming Geneva motor show at the start of March.

Details are scarce at the moment but Hyundai has revealed that it will offer two different powertrains in the electric Kona, claiming that it will be one of the most powerful electric vehicles in its segment.

Hyundai has also claimed that the Kona will have a range just shy of 470km.

The move to electrify its smallest SUV follows the car maker's launch of the Ioniq overseas – Australian models are due to launch in a few months – and reflects the brand's overall strategy to release 18 eco-friendly models around the globe by 2025.

Not all electrified models will be fully-electric though, as Hyundai is planning a number of hybrid versions of it four- and rear-wheel drive vehicles, which potentially could mean a hybrid model of the next-generation Santa Fe and several Genesis models as well.

However, Hyundai isn't just moving forward with electrified vehicles with the South Korean giant also preparing a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, the Nexo, which was revealed at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in January.

The Hyundai Nexo FCV is the brand's second-generation hydrogen vehicle, following the previous ix35 FCV, and while it will only be available in a select few markets, 20 models are confirmed to arrive in Canberra as part of a sustainable energy project with the CSIRO.

Hyundai will reveal full details of the Kona electric on the eve of the Geneva motor show.
