The US-based Historic Vehicle Association (HVA) has added the 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 "Time Machine" Hero Car from the 1985 film Back to the Future to its historic vehicle register.

The HVA was founded by philanthropic support in 2009 by American specialist vehicle insurance firm Hagerty, to "promote the cultural and historical significance of the automobile, and protect the future of automotive history".

It currently represents 350,000 members – claiming to be the world's latest classic vehicle owners' association.

The addition of the famed time-travelling DeLorean brings the total number of vehicles on the register to 29. It applies specifically to the vehicle used in the Hollywood flick, and not regular DeLorean DMC-12 vehicles.

Other noteworthy cars on the same list include the 1964 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe and 1984 Plymouth Voyager.

Known for its starring role in the Back to the Future franchise the DMC-12 was built by DeLorean motor company, founded by infamous General Motors executive John DeLorean.
