BMW Australia pushing For Cut Throat M5 Pricing

BMW is hoping to offer more for less with its upcoming fifth-generation M5.

Even though it has yet to confirm local pricing and specifications for the flagship performance sedan, BMW Australia says it is pushing to make sure the latest model undercuts the outgoing model.

Considering the new M5 with M xDrive is more powerful, lighter and packed with more kit, it would be quite a feat to shave dollars off the highly anticipated new performance sedan. The UK has also announced its pricing, and that goes up.

But Australia is one of M Division’s strongest markets and BMW Australia has already been making sharp pricing a key factor on some of its models, including the just released M140i LCI which now drops to under $60,000.

According to BMW Australia product communications manager, Adam Davis, the local contingent is pushing to ensure the new BMW M5 is not only its new hero car but also not too far out of reach.

“We are working hard to make sure that the upcoming BMW M5 is priced at less than the current M5 model,” he said.

“We want the new M5, with its incredible power output and new drive system, to be the hero car in our line-up that has an equally appealing price point”.

Davis won’t confirm if the price target is in regards to the F10 M5 ($230,615) or the M5 Pure ($184,715), which did without many of the creature comforts in the fully loaded M5, or both.

The upcoming M5 marks the first time an M car moves away from rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive, a move the company has explained is neccessary to help plant the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8’s 441kW and 750Nm to the ground. For those who cry foul of the idea of not having a rear-wheel drive M car, the trick new M xDrive system does allow the user to decouple drive from the front wheels altogether in certain situations.

The 2018 BMW M5 launches overseas in November, with local timing yet to be announced.
