Baby Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen confirmed for production with electric power

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed plans to build a smaller sibling to the iconic G-Class four-wheel-drive, with electric power.

The German car maker confirmed plans for the vehicle at the unveiling of the Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA concept during the 2023 Munich motor show, with a teaser image outlining its silhouette and a lower-case 'g-Class' name.

The image of the 'Little G' – its final name yet to be announced – shows it will inherit the iconic boxy design cues of the current G-Class, including a traditional boot-mounted spare wheel, but in a smaller footprint expected to lead to a more affordable model.

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius confirmed the vehicle will be electric – and told global media that buyers can expect the 'Little G' to offer similar capabilities, design and character to its full-size sibling.

Details about the Little G are still under wraps, however it is believed it could adopt the new MMA platform planned for the next-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA small sedan – as well as the GLA and GLB SUVs.

It is unclear how comprehensive the four-wheel-drive capabilities and features of the 'Little G' (never 'Baby G' either, as Casio have that one covered) will be.

It is very likely to be cheaper than the full-size G-Class, which has only become more expensive as it has incorporated new technology in the latest generation – and the Australian model range has been culled to one AMG version only, priced from about $400,000 drive-away.

However the 'Little G' is expected to be the size of a Jeep Wrangler, rather than as small and affordable as the ever-popular Suzuki Jimny.
