A 2001 Volvo S80 racks up over one million kms in the UK
A 2001 Volvo S80 has surfaced in England with an original 717,000 miles (1,153,899km) on the odometer.
The 2.5D model, powered by a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel making 103kW and 290Nm, was bought new in 2001 and put in to service as a VIP hire car. It covered the first 400,000 miles (643,000km) in the first three years of its working life before finding a second life as an airport taxi.
The original owner finally sold the car in 2016, and it has since gone on to have a further three owners, the most recent of whom took it over the 700,000 mile (1,126,540km) mark.
Now, the car has been acquired by British automotive publication, Bargain Cars, which plans on doing a tour of Britain in it and then keeping the odometer running until it ticks over 750,000 miles (1,207,008km).
Bargain Cars editor Peter Simpson said: “The Volvo is remarkable, not only because it is still going but also because it still drives really well – it’s powerful, smooth and still quite tight. It goes to show that if you maintain a car well, it’ll reward you with reliability.”
The Volvo S80 isn’t the even close to a record for the Swedish brand however, with a one-owner Volvo P1800 racking up over 3.2 million miles (over 5 million kilometres). American Irv Gordon bought the P1800 new in 1966 and spent the next 52 years driving it every day, clocking up the 3.2million mile mark in May, 2018.
