2024 Toyota Prado ute imagined

What would the new Toyota Prado look like as a ute – and should Toyota build it?

The first new Toyota Prado in nearly 15 years was revealed last week, with a boxier look, bigger body, more modern interior and the option of hybrid power overseas.

A five-door wagon is now the only body style, after the three-door wagon – axed in Australia in 2013 – was dropped globally.

But what about a ute? These computer illustrations by digital artist Theottle show what a Prado pick-up could look like.

About half of all new Toyotas sold in Australia are body-on-frame utes or 4WD wagons – and the HiLux ute has been Australia’s best-selling vehicle for the past seven years – so a Prado with a tray is unlikely to be a hard sell Down Under.

There has never been a factory-built Toyota Prado ute, though it has traditionally shared – and continues to share – its underpinnings with certain body-on-frame Toyota utes, including the Tacoma pick-up sold in the US (but not the HiLux).

The closest Toyota has drawn to a Prado ute is the original model, which was based on the LandCruiser 70 Series – a vehicle that offers single-cab and dual-cab chassis body styles in Australia, as well as a single-cab ‘styleside’ pick-up body overseas.

It is not known if Toyota has plans for a Prado ute, however it appears unlikely given the cross-over it would have with Australia’s HiLux and the US Tacoma.
