  • Transit Custom-based people-mover offers diesel power
  • Priced from $65,990 before on-road costs

Ford is due to return to the people-mover category for the first time in more than three decades with the 2024 Ford Tourneo, expected in showrooms by the end of 2024.

The Turkish-built Tourneo – the passenger version of the Ford Transit Custom delivery van – offers transport for up to eight people and removable seats.

Two variants will comprise the Australian line-up, with both the Active and Titanium X versions powered by a turbo-diesel engine which powers the front wheels – priced from $65,990 before on-road costs.

Ford hasn't sold a people-mover of this type in Australia since the 1983-1990 Ford Spectron – itself based on the Mazda E-Series van – as the brand attempts to diversify its line-up away from the top-selling Ford Ranger and Ford Everest.

Nearly 90 per cent of Ford's sales last year were comprised of those two models alone.

The Ford Tourneo is based on the Transit Custom long-wheelbase van and shares a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine which develops 125kW and 390Nm.

These outputs are sent to the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Beyond the Tourneo's ability to carry eight people the vehicle will be able to tow up to 2500kg (braked trailer).

Inside, there is flexible track-mounted seating which can be slid forward and back, with the second and third rows able to be removed to increase the Tourneo's load-carrying capacity.

The three middle-row seats can spin 180 degrees independently for a conference-style arrangement. Ford claims no other van in its segment has the same seating flexibility.

It slots into the people-mover category dominated by the Kia Carnival and will also rival the likes of the Volkswagen Multivan, Toyota Granvia, and Hyundai Staria.

The Kia Carnival accounts for about 78 per cent of people-mover sales in Australia.

Two Tourneo variants are available – the off-road-styled Active and the better-equipped Titanium X. A list of prices and standard features is supplied below.
