2022 Nissan X-Trail plug-in hybrid to arrive with seven seats
Sharing a platform with the Mitsubishi Outlander, the next Nissan X-Trail is expected to arrive locally with seven seats and a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The new-generation 2022 Nissan X-Trail plug-in hybrid is one step closer to Australia, with more evidence the model will arrive locally with a three-row option.
As the X-Trail shares its underpinnings with the new Mitsubishi Outlander, the Nissan SUV is expected to arrive here with an optional plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, alongside the petrol-only engine.
Like the recently-teased Outlander PHEV, the electrified X-Trail is expected to be offered with a 99kW/199Nm 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, as well as a 70kW/195Nm electric motor at the rear axle and a 60kW/137Nm electric motor powering the front wheels.
While details have yet to be released, a larger battery than the 13.8kWh lithium-ion unit in the previous-generation Outlander will be coming for the X-Trail (and its new-generation Outlander twin), potentially delivering up to 100 kilometres of emissions-free driving.
Mitsubishi's confirmation last week that the Outlander PHEV will be offered with seven seats aligns with a rumour out of Japan in January 2021, which suggested the X-Trail will be offered with three rows of seats and a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
If proven true, the Nissan X-Trail PHEV would be only the fifth seven-seater plug-in hybrid vehicle to be sold in Australia.
