2021 Formula One British Grand Prix: Round 10 wrap
It was a dramatic start to the British Grand Prix with the championship leader crashing, while a penalty couldn't stop the power of Lewis Hamilton.
There was plenty of hype heading into the 2021 Formula One British Grand Prix, with the starting order decided by a 100km sprint race.
The results, however, didn't shake things up as expected, with Max Verstappen claiming pole and both silver arrows lining up behind him.
The drama began from the moment the lights went out, with the battle well and truly on between Max and Lewis. The roar from the 140,000 fans could be heard on the first lap until the intense contest came to a premature end.
With the two breathing down each other's necks, it was a tap from Hamilton that plunged Verstappen into the barriers on the exit to Copse corner.
The race was then stopped with plenty of drama during the red flag period as both teams presented their arguments to race direction – with the result being a ten-second penalty to be served by Lewis for causing an incident.
Charles Leclerc started from the top spot on the restart and managed to keep the lead even after complaining about a lack of power from lap 14.
The pit stops worked in favour for Valtteri Bottas pitting on lap 23, responding to Lando Norris who was sent in on lap 22 but suffered a longer stop.
Running out of front-left tyre performance, Hamilton pitted on lap 28, and after serving his ten-second penalty, he was fed back into the field in fifth position.
Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari was sent in on lap 29 but also got stuck in the pit lane for longer than anticipated after a problem with the left front wheel nut. Charles Leclerc retained the lead following a perfect stop on lap 30.
Even after serving a penalty Hamilton managed to push through the field up to third, switching into Bottas' second spot on lap 40 following team orders.
With the Ferrari lacking the necessary pace, Hamilton managed to close the gap between himself and Leclerc, and it was on lap 50 when he eventually took the lead of the race.
Hamilton would again be victorious on his home turf, making it eight wins at Silverstone. Charles Leclerc had a brilliant drive in the Ferrari, finishing in second, while Valtteri Bottas took the final podium position.
The McLaren cars didn't have as much pace on the hard tyre as they did on the medium. Norris took home fourth, while Daniel Ricciardo scored his best finish for the season coming home in fifth.
After a sensational recovery drive from Hamilton he now sits just eight points behind Verstappen heading into Hungary.
