2018 Volkswagen Polo – Price And Features

Volkswagen ups the price and equipment of its little hatch.

The German carmaker is launching its next-generation Polo city car in Australia next month with a raft of updates as it looks to do battle with key rivals.

Initially, Volkswagen will offer a three-tier range consisting of an entry-level Trendline model, a higher-specified Comfortline and a short-term range-topping Launch Edition.

Pricing starts from $17,990 before on-road costs for the Trendline when equipped with a five-speed manual transmission - adding a seven-speed DSG automatic adds a further $2500 to the price. The new point of entry represents a $500 premium over the outgoing model.

Power for the Trendline comes from a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit that produces a serviceable 70kW of power and a more than helpful 175Nm of torque. Claimed fuel use is 4.8 l/100km for the manual and 5.0 l/100km when paired with the DSG.

Standard kit for the Trendline includes 15-inch steel wheels, cruise control, leather steering wheel, heated side mirrors, low tyre pressure monitor and an 8.0-inch infotainment system with a reversing camera which is also compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Volkswagen has added autonomous emergency braking across the range, a key safety feature in this segment, along with a driver fatigue warning.

The Comfortline model is priced from $19,490 when paired to a six-speed manual or $21,990 when equipped with the seven-speed DSG transmission.

Volkswagen has also upped the outputs of the little 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine for the Comfortline, with power and torque increased to a class-leading 85kW and 200Nm. Fuel is rated at 5.1 l/100km for the manual and 5.0 l/100km for the auto.

On top of the gear included in the Trendline, the Comfortline scores 15-inch alloy wheels, auto headlights, rain sensing wipers, upgraded cloth upholstery and an anti-dazzle rear view mirror.

The initial run of models will also include a Launch Edition which will sit atop the range priced at $20,490 for the manual and $22,990 for the auto. It kicks in additional 16-inch alloy wheels, tinted rear window, front fog lights, dark tinted LED tail lights and a wireless charging pad over the stock Comfortline.

Potential buyers of the Comfrtline and Launch Edition models wanting to up the safety specification have the option of a $1400 pack that includes adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear traffic alert, auto folding side mirrors and pre crash safety system.

The new Polo is now available for order. The Polo range will grow by mid-year with the arrival of the Polo Bets and the 147kW/320Nm Polo GTI models.
