2018 Jeep Compass – Price And features For Australia

Jeep has revealed the key details of its new Compass as the brand sets its sights on a bigger slice of the still-growing compact SUV market in Australia.

Designed as a larger companion to the urban-focussed Renegade, but more petite than the Cherokee medium SUV, the new Compass will be positioned against strong-sellers like Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, and Toyota RAV4.

The returning Compass name will offer buyers a choice of four model grades with a starting price of $28,850 (plus on-road costs) for the entry-level Sport and topping out at $44,750 (plus on-roads) for the trail-rated Trailhawk, which Jeep claims is the most off-road capable vehicle in its class.

In between is the mid-spec Longitude (at $33,750 plus on-roads) and the luxury-focused Limited, which costs from $41,250 with a 2.4-litre petrol four-cylinder or $43,750 with an optional 2.0-litre turbo diesel.

All models are based on the same global platform that is shared with the Renegade and Fiat 500X, but the five-seat Compass is significantly larger than those, measuring 4394mm in overall length and riding on a 2636mm wheelbase.

Uniquely, all right-hand drive Compass variants, including those for Australia, are imported from a new manufacturing facility in India, which Jeep claims is exceeding internal quality standards.

The Compass Sport is powered by a 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 129kW and 229Nm and drives the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. A six-speed automatic can be optioned for an additional $1900.

Standard equipment for the Compass Sport includes 17-inch alloy wheels, cloth trim, a 5.0-inch touchscreen with a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, digital radio, and a reverse camera.

The Longitude comes standard with a six-speed automatic as well as  front fog lights, roof rails, privacy glass, automatic wipers and headlights, and LED ambient interior lighting. Owners can also choose to upgrade the infotainment system to a 8.4-inch unit with satellite navigation and smartphone mirroring as well as dual-zone climate control for $2150.

Moving up to the Compass Limited sees a part-time all-wheel drive transmission with off-road mode selector and a nine-speed automatic transmission form the basis of the mechanical package.

Inside the Limited moves upmarket with leather trim, a 7-inch digital display in the instrument cluster, push-button start, heated front seats with power adjustment, and a nine-speaker Beats audio system linked to the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen.

It also has Bi-Xenon headlights, LED tail lamps, front and rear parking sensors and semi-automated parking assistance.

A black roof can be optioned for $495, while a dual-pane panoramic sunroof costs $1950. An optional Advanced Technology Pack brings extra safety functions such as adaptive cruise control, forward collision and lane departure warning, a power-operated tailgate, automatic high beam, and blind spot monitoring for $2450.

The Trailhawk carries the same standard equipment list as the Limited, but is exclusively offered with a 2.0-litre turbo diesel that generates 125kW and 350Nm while its chassis and body work has been optimised for off-road work, with the suspension raised by 20mm for additional ground clearance, the front and rear bumpers are shallower for better entry and departure angles and the all-wheel drive system features a low-range function and unique Rock mode.
