2011-2015 Kia Sportage, Cerato and Sorento recalled due to engine failure risk

Infrequent servicing could cause certain examples of the Kia Sportage, Cerato and Sorento to develop a fault in their engines that may lead to a complete failure.

Kia Australia has recalled 5069 examples of its 2011-2015 Sportage, Cerato and Sorento – warning an engine failure could occur if owners do not frequently inspect and service their vehicles.

The recall affects certain examples of Kia's SL-generation Sportage, YD-generation Cerato and XM-generation Sorento built between 2011 and 2015 – despite the three models not sharing a common engine between them in Australia.

The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: "If the subject vehicles are continuously operated without inspection, the engine may exhibit abnormal noise and potentially seize. This may cause a sudden loss of motive power and/or a vehicle fire.

"A sudden loss of motive power whilst driving and/or a vehicle fire could increase the potential risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users, bystander and/or damage to property."
