Our government only has to "fork out money" because other governments are willing to do even more. The locals could be far more profitable as import-only brands, the government money is all about attracting foreign investment in Australian industry, not propping up a failing one. And for an investment of $275million, they get back $6billion in taxes alone. That is a 2000% return on their investment, which can fund a lot of hospital beds, even though hospital beds just cost money with zero return.

I think you definitely do the former. As I said, no-one goes into a showroom and only looks at base models, they go in with a budget and want the most car they can get for it. If someone was willing to consider a $25,000 Focus, why would they refuse to consider spending the same on a 1.4iTi option for Cruze or a disiesel i30?
