Bonnie Doon might be known to most of you as the home of the house from The Castle, but it’s also known by the locals as the gateway to the Victorian High Country. Start your drive here as we did, on the shores of the beautiful Lake Eildon.
Head east out of Bonnie Doon on the Maroondah Highway toward Maindample before turning left onto the Midland Link Highway and driving northeast toward the junction with the Midland Highway and the town of Barjarg. You’ll then have a scenic run alongside the picturesque Nillahcootie Dam.
When you reach the town of Swanpool, turn right and head east again on Swanpool Road toward the Kooyonga Creek Winery, where you’ll turn left at the junction onto Samaria Road and make your way north to Morngang. Turn right there onto Tatong-Morngang Road for a short run east across to the town of Benalla and a left turn onto Benalla-Tatong Road.
Turn right a few kilometres down the road onto Molyullah-Tatong Road to the junction with Kilfeera Road, where you’ll turn right again. Kilfeera Road eventually joins up with Benalla-Whitfield Road, where you head south past Brookfield Maze, looking for Boggy Creek Road.
When you switch onto Boggy Creek Road, you’ll pass through the town of Myrrhee, heading north again toward the junction with Wangaratta-Whitfield Road. Turn left there and point your vehicle toward the Moyhu General Store. From there, it’s an easy run north to Oxley.
The drive from Oxley across to Bright is of the most picturesque in the region and you leave the town of Oxley on Snow Road. On Snow Road, you’ll pass the well-known Brown Brothers Winery, as you head east.
Pass through the town of Markwood, still on Snow Road, to the junction with the Great Alpine Road, where you will turn right and head to Myrtleford. Continue along the Great Alpine Road through Ovens, Eurobin and Porepunkah before you roll into one the region’s gems, Bright.
