With official power figures for the FG based FPV range released yesterday, it is accurate to suggest that FPV have come off the bench, gloves off and ready for an Australian performance sedan showdown.
If you thought HSV’s move to LS3 6.2-litre V8 power had “sealed the deal” for HSV, then you’d be wrong. FPV have worked hard and the result is two engines with very impressive power figures – especially the 4.0-litre I6 turbo-charged mill.

UPDATE - GALLERY OF OFFICIAL IMAGES ADDED
We’ll get the FPV range up first and then look at the rest of the Ford range later today - its the FPV product that has proved to be the most elusive to-date. Unfortunately, FPV didn’t come to Melbourne with one of their Gunmetal Grey GT’s or F6’s. It was all blue for the cars that no longer display the blue oval.
The image gallery follows and we’ll be heading back in for more and better as the day progresses, so check back for an image update later in the day.

Pictures of FPV’s new FG based product are a little thin on the ground at the moment, so we have to give credit where credit is due here. The guys over at Australian Ford Forums have their fingers on the pulse and had a ‘mole in the hole’ at today’s preview. Thanks to ‘russellw’ we can give you this close-up look at the FPV Super Pursuit Ute AND the GT sedan.
The Oz Ford Forum guys have a bunch of other ‘on-site’ images and details so tap the following link and check them and the new FG Falcon out - Australian Ford Forum. They are rightfully rather proud of their new hotshot performance models.

We’ve shown you the FPV GT-Cobra before but seeing it in the flesh makes you appreciate just how good the Ford/FPV product is, even if the current model Falcon is due for replacement in 2008. Packing a 302kw BOSS 5.4-litre V8 the GT-Cobra looked sensational. Follow the link to see the gallery.

FPV had no intention of letting HSV get all of the attention and fielded two notable new models. The GT Cobra was tucked away in the background a little (we’ll show you that soon) and sitting in front of it was the new FPV F6X. We’ll bring you full details of FPV’s new Territory based performance SUV soon but for now rest assured that it packs a reasonable punch.

The Aussie Ford fan has certainly had a weekend worth remembering. Not only did Ford fill all three spots on the podium at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 but FPV used the “great race” as the launch platform for its new limited run GT Cobra.

Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) have announced the release of their new limited-edition F6 R-Spec Typhoon. The F6 R-Spec is one of two expected limited-edition releases in the lead-up to the new ‘Orion’ Falcon in early 2008, the other being the rumoured ‘Cobra’.
The F6 R-Spec features FPV’s R-Spec suspension package as first introduced on the GT 40th Anniversary limited edition. Setting the R-Spec apart from the run-of-the-mill F6 are unique R-Spec badging and ‘Dark Argent’ gunmetal accents on the rear spoiler and alloy wheels.
“The initial idea behind R-Spec was to provide an FPV vehicle for those people who wanted to be more competitive at track days and club sprint events, but who didn’t want to compromise on the comfort of daily driving either. The GT 40th Anniversary succeeded in fitting that brief, and now for the first time our customers can enjoy the same superior level of suspension and handling on our award-winning Typhoon model. The set-up on the F6 is different to our Boss 290 package to account for the different mass of the Typhoon. The most significant change has been to the front end damper tune”, said FPV General Manager Rod Barrett
Inside, the R-Spec features FPV’s leather seats and an iPod/MP3 audio player connection as standard. Floor mats feature an embossed F6 R-Spec logo. The R-Spec is available in six colours including Neo, Ego, Silhouette, Winter Light, Vixen and Lightning Strike.
Pricing starts at $63,310 excluding dealer delivery and govt charges. The R-Spec is available with either a six-speed manual or the excellent ZF six-speed automatic gearbox.

While the HSV marketing machine seems to be in a state of permanent overdrive there has been little to be heard from FPV in recent months. The big news of 2007 was the Prodrive broom sweeping aside six senior executives including the General Manager at the time, Sak Ryopponen…an unfortunate first name given that Sak was given the sack.
But lets not dwell on the past and the behind the scenes machinations. What I am really interested in are the FPV models in the pipeline. I am predicting a big year for FPV in 2008, when the Falcon Orion based models finally arrive in showrooms.
• The return of the Falcon GTHO. Now, the cynical amongst us will note that the return of this legendary badge seems to be an annual rumour, whispered in dark corridors by Ford aficionados hoping for a modern day
return of the King. Let’s hope that FPV can do the original legend proud.
• FPV’s Falcon Orion based models will be launched within a month of the standard Ford product.
• Two new FPV models will be launched at this years Australian International Motor Show in October. Most likely the new FPV Territory and a mystery car called “Cobra”.
• Four and five cylinder FPV models will be a reality in the future.
It seems a little odd perhaps to be introducing new models based on the current platform but FPV will debut the first of its limited-edition models this Friday. Dubbed the R-spec F6 Typhoon, it will be followed in October by the Cobra, a 302Kw celebration of Ford’s famous 1-2 finish at Bathurst in 1977. Nothing like a few limited editions to keep an old model dancing for a few more months.
We will be at the Sydney Motor Show this year and will bring you all the glamour snaps from the FPV stand. In the meantime if you want to read about the daytime soap opera that has been playing out between Ford and FPV since the Prodrive sackings you can check out the comprehensive article over at GoAuto.
