A recent Chrysler announcement has us pondering a HEMI-less future. In an interview with Automotive News, Chrysler co-president Jim Press stated that, “The HEMI is not the powertrain of the future”.
The future is never easy to predict but there are two issues that we know for certain will continue to change the face of the motor vehicle – the rising price of oil and the need to reduce green house emissions. In the U.S. and Europe there are of course the continually tightening fuel economy requirements of government to contend with as well, none of which bodes well for large capacity V8’s.

When it comes to modern American muscle there is absolutely no doubt that the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 is the one that “fries my burger” best. Forget the Viper and Corvette, Mustang or even the yet to be released Camaro, they just don’t “do cool” as well as the Challenger – and I’m not alone with these thoughts.
With pricing only released on the 29th of November, there has been unprecedented demand for the new hottie on the block. In just the first day, 4,300 lucky Americans stumped up a deposit to get their name in the order book. If that wasn’t enough as of yesterday some 6,000 individuals had found their local dodge dealer and handed over the cash. Chrysler have at this stage only committed to producing 4,000 Challenger SRT-8’s each year which will leave a couple of thousand wannabe owners waiting…and waiting…and waiting.

Dodge have recently confirmed the manufacturing launch of their 2008 SRT10 Viper. As if the Viper wasn’t already crazy enough Dodge have equipped the 2008 SRT10 with an 8.4-litre 600-horsepower (450kW) V-10 engine, enough to see it accelerate from 0-60mph (96kmh) in less than 4 seconds and 0-100-0mph in the low 12-second range. The expected shake-out at Chrysler LLC has begun with the announcement overnight of the automaker’s plan to drop four models from it’s line-up, along with a corresponding 12,000 jobs. Getting the axe are the Chrysler PT Cruiser convertible, Chrysler Pacifica, Chrysler Crossfire, and the Dodge Magnum.
