Germany’s major manufacturers must be a bit miffed that a bunch of foreigners are attempting to earn the title of fastest sports car on the hallowed ground that is their Nurburgring Nordschliefe. Nissan’s GT-R, Lexus’ LF-A and Chevrolet’s Corvette ZR1 have all been spotted turning in hot laps at the world-renowned circuit, but now Mercedes-Benz’s SL65 AMG Black Edition has taken to the track to demonstrate that when it comes to building fast cars, the home team still has a few tricks up its sleeve.

CAR Online claims to have the scoop on the rumoured development of a new gullwinged Mercedes super-coupe that will take the place of the Mercedes-McLaren SLR (above) as the top-of-the-range performance flagship.
Codenamed the C197 and previously referred to as the SLC, the gullwinged coupe is expected to debut at the 2010 Geneva Motorshow where it’s said it will be badged as an AMG rather than a Mercedes-Benz - making this the first stand-alone product of M-B’s tuning division. CAR’s source says that the C197 will be 4650mm long, 1950mm wide and 1250mm high with a wheelbase of 2700mm and an estimated weight of 1650kg - 45kg less than the SLR. Power from the 6.3-litre AMG V8 is expected to be around the 550hp mark while torque will most likely be close to 445lb/ft, which should be sufficient to propel it to 100kph in 3.8 seconds. » Read Article

Following on from Mercedes-Benz’s recent reveal of their updated SL-Class comes the AMG versions. The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is one of those cars that suits in equal measure, the enthusiast or the poseur. AMG’s version on the other hand is really only suited to the hardcore enthusiast with a love of horsepower and no concern for fuel consumption.
You can choose from two AMG versions of the SL, the entry level SL 63 AMG and the range topping SL 65 AMG. The SL 63 AMG is as the name suggests powered by a Mercedes-Benz 6.3-litre V8 producing 386kW and 630Nm, enough to see it lead its class in the power stakes. But remember, this is just the entry level SL and it’s the SL 65 AMG where things start to get a little raunchy.

Just prior to Christmas we showed you the official images and provided some of the details concerning the facelifted 2008 Mercedes SLK range. At the time the only mention of the SLK55 AMG version was that the same supercharged 5.5-litre V8 used in the outgoing model was being carried over, unchanged – not that it needs more power.
The changes made by AMG appear to be largely cosmetic as you can see in the images. The largely revised and more Formula 1’ish front bumper that the “standard” non-AMG four and six-cylinder models have inherited in the facelift have been slung over the right shoulders of the folks at AMG and an altogether more menacing and purposeful unit clipped into place.

The rear also benefits from trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes and AMG-inspired darkened tail lights. The now larger exterior mirrors feature LED indicators with a pronounced arrow shape, while the range of light-alloy wheels is also almost entirely new.
