How to retrofit Apple CarPlay to your car

There's no need to wait until you get a new set of wheels to enjoy the benefits of Apple CarPlay when you're on the road.

You can't legally hold your phone while driving, but if your car's entertainment system supports Apple CarPlay, you can connect your phone to your car and control everything from the big screen in the dash.

This allows you to make most of your iPhone when you're behind the wheel, so you can get turn-by-turn directions, make calls, send and receive messages, listen to music and more.

Many brand-new cars come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built in, letting you connect your smartphone wirelessly and/or via a USB cable.

But what can you do if your current ride isn't that smart? Is it possible to retrofit Apple CarPlay to your daily driver? Here's what you need to know.

Can I add Apple CarPlay to an old car?

Yes, thankfully it's not difficult to upgrade your old car to support Apple CarPlay so you can connect your iPhone. It's a smart investment, as cars with CarPlay tend to have better resale value.

One option is to upgrade your car's entertainment system.

Many CarPlay head units require a 'double-DIN' slot in the console so there's room for a touchscreen, DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) being the international standard for the height and width of head units to ensure they’re interchangeable.

You'll also find smaller single-DIN CarPlay options with a large screen mounted to the front – just make sure the screen won't cover anything important in the centre console.

To make things easy, some single-DIN units feature a motorised flip-out screen.

Alternatively, you can get a standalone CarPlay touchscreen that attaches to the dashboard or windscreen and runs sound to your existing car stereo.

How much does it cost to add Apple CarPlay to an old car?

CarPlay-compatible head units from the well-known brands start at $400 to $500 when shopping in Australia's major auto parts and car audio stores.

You can pay more than $1000 for a top-of-the-line unit with all the bells and whistles.

You'll find cheaper CarPlay options if you shop online and consider lesser-known brands.

Keep in mind, you generally get what you pay for, and you don't always get great after-sales support when shopping on the likes of Amazon and eBay.

Where do I go to have Apple CarPlay added to my car?

If you buy your new CarPlay head unit from a major auto parts or car audio retailer, chances are they'll also offer a paid installation service.

Can I add Apple CarPlay to my car myself?

When dealing with electrical components and wiring, it's always safer to consult a professional.

However, if you're confident and have experience with automotive modifications, it is possible to replace your car's head unit yourself.

Depending on your car, this might involve removing the front of the centre console and adding some wiring adaptors.

Search online for DIY guides and YouTube videos for your exact make and model of car, plus consider investing in some automotive trim tools.

They make life easier and reduce the likelihood of damaging things as you take the centre console apart and put it back together again.

Alternatively, you could opt for a standalone CarPlay touchscreen, attach it to the dashboard or windscreen and leave your existing head unit as is.
