This is officially Sydney’s busiest intersection in 2023

Can you guess the busiest intersection in Sydney so far in 2023?

While long-suffering Sydneysiders would likely say the entire city is one giant traffic hotspot, it turns out some areas really do experience worse congestion than others.

In fact, as more commuters favour cars over public transport post-pandemic, the harbourside city has seen a spike in travel times in recent years.

According to 2022 data from the TomTom Traffic Index, Sydney is Australia's most congested city, with drivers spending an average of 203 hours in peak hour per year.

To identify the particular pain points on Sydney's road network, Drive tapped the Transport for NSW team.

The road authority pulled data from a series of traffic detectors placed across Sydney's road network that record vehicle movements across any given day.

According to the data, the busiest intersection in Sydney – with the highest volume of vehicle movements in a day – is the junction of Anzac Parade and Boyce Road in the suburb of Maroubra.

This junction had an average of 182,145 vehicle movements per day.

It's worth noting the vehicle detectors may count the same car twice, so the data is a better indicator of overall traffic movement, rather than individual trips or cars in the area.

In second place, the intersection of Pittwater Road and Howard Avenue in Dee Why recorded an average of 174,731 vehicle movements per day.

The intersection of Narellan Road and Tramway Drive in Currans Hill, a suburb south-west of Sydney, placed third with 159,113 vehicle movements a day.

In fourth spot was Centenary Drive and Arthur Street in Homebush West – an intersection that has drawn criticism in the past for its propensity to create a traffic bottleneck.

In fifth place was tourist attraction and traffic thoroughfare, the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

While not technically an intersection, the bridge sees an average of 149,250 vehicle movements per day and rates as Australia's second busiest bridge, just behind the West Gate Bridge in Melbourne.
