Volvo has released new details of its high-riding V40 Cross Country this week, ahead of its debut at the Paris Motor Show this month.

Throwing out the expected XC40 name, the V40 hatch-based Cross Country retains the familiar lines, but gains a jacked-up suspension package and off-road styling features.

The Cross Country joins a host of hatches to get the crossover treatment, including Subaru's Impreza-based XV, Suzuki's SX4, and the Scout version of Skoda's Octavia wagon.

The Cross Country's mechanical system is largely identical to the regular V40, with an all-wheel-drive system fitted to the top-shelf 187kW 2.5 litre turbo petrol T5 model.

In front-wheel-drive only, the Cross Country's other engines include a 157kW 2.0 litre version of the T5 engine, along with a 132kW 1.6 litre turbo petrol.

Transmissions for the petrol engines include a six-speed auto for the T5 model, and six-speed auto and manual options for the T4.

Diesel engines include the 130kW five-cylinder 2.0 litre D4, and a 110kW 2.0 litre D3. Both are available with six-speed auto and manual transmissions.

There is also a small 84kW D2 1.6 litre engine, available with a six-speed manual and fitted with stop/start technology.
