Volvo has a fleet of electric vehicles ready to hit the showroom floor, but the Swedish carmaker doesn’t think the public is ready for EVs.

That’s the word from Volvo’s vice president of product strategy, Lex Kerssemakers, who reportedly told the UK’s Autocar that the current business case for EVs is weak.

Instead, Volvo will ease its customers into the world of all-electric motoring by focusing on plug-in hybrid models; at least for the foreseeable future.

“Once there is a more sustainable business case behind full EV we can do it - our platform is scalable and fully flexible,” Mr Kerssemakers said.

“But we must see how the EV business evolves and what pressures there are from fuel efficiency requirements and cities closing borders.”

The idea that a major city would restrict access to vehicles failing to meet a certain ‘green’ criteria is growing.
