Here it is, at last. The new Volkswagen Golf.

And the new Audi A3.

Also the new Tiguan, the next Passat, future generations of the Polo, Beetle and Scirocco, the Euro-market Touran and Sharan, the next Jetta, and more than a few Seat and Skoda models.

In simple terms, it's Volkswagen's new multi-purpose Modularer Querbaukasten platform - MQB for short, or in (roughly translated) English: Modular Transverse Matrix.

The new platform is set to appear beneath all of the above models over the coming years, and likely a few more. We could potentially expect a production version of last year's Cross Coupe concept, and - finally - the popular Kombi-inspired Bulli.

Volkswagen calls the MQB system a long-term architecture, designed to underpin models as small as the Polo (not the Up!, mind you), through to a family car as big as the Passat.

Built to be lighter than all of the brand's current equivalent platforms, the MQB will also accommodate petrol, diesel, and various alternative-energy powertrains.

The first models to debut on the new platform will be the new seventh-generation Golf (rumoured to be headed for this year's Paris Motor Show), and the new Audi A3 hatch and sedan, at March's Geneva Motor Show.

Volkswagen has also touched on its new engine lines, including the petrol-powered EA211 series, a four-cylinder engine producing between 44kW and 110kW depending on its tune, and the new EA288 diesel series, delivering between 66kW and 140kW.
