Volkswagen has released a single "teaser" photo for one of its four concepts bound for this week's Detroit Auto Show, leaving viewers to guess at what lies beneath the veil.

Among Volkswagen's confirmed debuts this week will be the new Jetta Hybrid sedan and a new electric vehicle concept reportedly based on the new Beetle.

The hidden concept shown here is unlikely to be either of the above and, judging by its proportions, we could instead be looking at a preview of the next-generation Phaeton luxury sedan.

Due in 2015, the new Phaeton is expected to ride on the MLM Evo platform developed together with prestige marque Audi, while taking its powerplants and other components from the Audi A8 limousine.

A big five-door hatchback is also rumoured, thanks no doubt to the Phaeton-previewing Concept D that did the rounds on the motor-show circuit in 1999.

Despite its 2015 schedule, Volkswagen was reportedly on track to reveal a second Concept D at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show, previewing the new Phaeton.

That never came to pass, but could we see it at Detroit instead? We'll know in the coming hours.
