Volkswagen has revealed a new pure-electric version of its Up city car, ahead of a public debut at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Dubbed e-up, the new EV is the German giant’s first pure-electric production car, previewed at Volkswagen’s annual Press and Investors Conference in Germany this week.

The e-up’s power is delivered via a single electric motor, rated at a maximum of 60kW/210Nm, with 40kW available continuously.

This enables the 1185kg e-Up (up 256kg) to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 14 seconds, and reach a top speed of 135km/h.

A maximum driving range of 150km is quoted for the e-up’s 18.7kWh lithium-ion battery system. A quick-charge function enables the batteries to reach 80 percent charge within 30 minutes.
