Volkswagen has given its new Golf R Cabriolet an official unveiling this week, while also announcing a new limited-edition performance flagship in the new Beetle range.

The brand-new Golf R hatch is due to debut at Geneva next month, but for now, the Golf R Cabriolet will join the current R hatch as a flagship in the existing line-up.

Entering above the plenty-hot GTI Cabrio, the topless R is powered not by the Golf R's Audi S3-shared engine, but rather by a more powerful tune of the GTI's 2.0 litre turbo.

The Cabrio's power is nearly a match for the European-market R hatch however, with the turbo-four churning out 195kW and 329Nm of torque. The engine is match to a six-speed DSG automatic.

Volkswagen says the Golf R Cabriolet will punch its way to 60mph (96km/h) in 6.4 seconds - around one second show of the slightly more powerful and torquier (and likely lighter) R hatch.

An Australian debut for the R Cabriolet has yet to be confirmed, although it is understood that the GTI Cabriolet, revealed in March last year, is still under consideration.

Volkswagen's all-new Golf R hatch, reportedly delivering as much as 215kW, is scheduled to debut internationally this month.
