Volkswagen's electrified Golf hatch will at last transition from concept to production this year, with a world premiere set to take place in Frankfurt next month.

The electric hatchback first appeared in the guise of the new Golf 7's predecessor, as part of Volkswagen's Blue-e-Motion trial program.

Earlier this year, Volkswagen revealed a 'concept' version of the new model in Geneva, but buyers will finally be able to get into an electrified Golf later this year.

Offered in five-door form only, the e-Golf is powered by an electric motor mounted in the engine bay, producing 85kW and 270Nm of torque - matching the earlier Blue-e-Motion model.

Volkswagen says the e-Golf will offer a driving range of around 190km off one charge, and energy for the motor is provided by an 24.2kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

A fast charger can charge the battery up to 80 percent in around 30 minutes.

With power sent to the front wheels only, the e-Golf lists a 0-100km/h time of 10.4 seconds, and a top speed of 140km/h. Two driving modes are available - Eco and Eco+ - and there's also four modes of regenerative braking.

Standard features include automatic climate control, navigation, LED headlights - a first for the Golf range - and a heated windshield.

Crucially, the e-Golf will offer the same rear storage capacity as the regular petrol and diesel Golf models, with the 205kg battery pack stored along the floor.

A launch outside of Europe has yet to be confirmed.
