A German newspaper has described two new Volkswagen SUVs as "certain," but comments from a company spokesperson this week paint a different picture.

According to business paper Handelsblatt, sources inside Volkswagen have confirmed that new small crossovers based on the Polo light car and Up! city car are on the cards.

The Polo can already be bought in Europe in 'CrossPolo' form which, like many Euro-market VW cars, adds off-roader styling elements and a raised suspension package.

The Up! has also been previewed in CrossUp! concept form, although the carmaker has yet to confirm a production version.

Rather than jacking up and enhancing the existing cars, the new SUVs would likely debut with all-new styling, sharing only the MQB underpinnings of the next-generation Polo, and the NSF platform of the Up! - an idea teased by the unique Buggy Up! concept.

The newspaper may have jumped the gun however, with a Volkswagen spokesperson offering only: "SUVs are very interesting. Our modular production system allows us further spinoffs. We haven't made a decision yet."

Volkswagen Slovakia boss - where the Up! is built - echoed the unnamed spokesperson's comments, adding that it is an area "we certainly must look at".

A Polo-based SUV would enter below the Tiguan - currently the smallest SUV in the Volkswagen range - and would tackle the likes of the Opel Mokka and, possibly, an SUV version of Peugeot's new 208.
