Volkswagen has decked out its still-new Amarok pickup with a handful of weekend-away goodies, showing off the Canyon concept at this week's Geneva Motor Show.

The German carmaker's marketeers say the Amarok Canyon has been customised for the freestyle kayaker in you, adding all the bits you'd need to get from the road to the nearest white-water river.

Based on the overseas TDI420 variant, the Canyon is powered by Volkswagen's 2.0 litre four-cylinder diesel, delivering 132kW and 420Nm of torque.

Setting the Canyon apart from its production counterpart are a set of 35mm wider bolt-on guards, making room for the 275/65 R 18 all-terrain tyres tucked beneath.

The big ute has also been jacked up, with a lift-kit giving the Canyon an extra 40mm of ground clearance. Throw the beefy tyres on, and the Canyon's roof is a full 85mm above the regular Amarok's lid.

In the back, you'll find two carbon-fibre kayaks secured in formed and padded cut-outs in the cargo floor, with the bows mounted to a gloss-black style bar along the sides.

On the Canyon's roof are a set of auxiliary lights, and the taillights have been given a smoked look.

An Australian launch for the flagship TDI420 is expected to occur sometime this year, confirmed with TMR by Volkswagen Australia's Karl Gehling in September last year.

As for the Canyon, it remains to be seen if these recreational goodies will make their way to the Amarok catalogue.
