VicRoads has launched Lessons from the Road, a free online resource aimed at helping supervisors of Victorian learner drivers.

The programme offers a series of eight short video clips, covering key areas of new driver instruction.

The episodes are broken down into topics such as the role of a supervisor, car control, reducing crash risk, choosing the right first car, and how to ease a learner into more complex driving experiences.

The clips form a ‘train the trainer’ approach to what can be a daunting parent/child experience, while also aiming to minimise the chance of bad habits being passed on to new drivers.

VicRoads says the programme is intended as an accompaniment to its Guide for Supervising Drivers handbook already issued with each Learner Logbook.

The current VicRoads graduated licensing system requires that learners record at least 120 hours of logged driving practice before qualifying for their Provisional license.

TMR reckons any step toward improved driver education is a good one, and you can watch the videos yourself here: www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/supervisors
