V8SC: Mercedes-Benz Expected To Join V8 Supercars Grid In 2013

V8 Supercars is today expected to announce Mercedes-Benz’ entry into the 2013 championship, joining Ford, Holden and Nissan on the grid.

The announcement, due at 1:00pm today, is expected to reveal that Erebus Racing has purchased outright the Ford-associated outfit Stone Brothers Racing to bring a fourth manufacturer to the series.

The entry is expected to be based on the E-Class large sedan, using bodywork and engines sourced through the AMG Customer Sports department.

Erebus Racing already has a strong association with AMG Customer Sports through its current Australian GT Championship SLS AMG GT3 entries.

It is understood that the Mercedes-Benz V8 Supercar foray will go ahead without any direct involvement from the carmaker's local arm, or that of its AMG performance and racing arm.

Earlier whispers had suggested that the program will be used to build recognition of Mercedes-Benz’ AMG brand through Asian markets, in line with V8 Supercars’ ongoing expansion of international rounds and television coverage.

While Mercedes-Benz Australia's David McCarthy has denied any official cooperation with the plan, it remains to be seen if the carmaker will maintain some involvement behind the scenes. 

The reports follow news earlier this year of Nissan’s upcoming entry into the previously Ford/Holden exclusive series.

Mercedes-Benz is currently associated with several levels of international motorsport, including Formula 1, GT Racing, and the German DTM series, offering a solid foundation for a V8 Supercar entry.
