England could reclaim the World Motorcycle Land Speed Record title with Triumph Motorcycles planning a tilt on the Bonneville Salt Flats next month.

Weather permitting, English TT rider Guy Martin hopes to climb aboard the ‘Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner’ and use the 11-mile (17.6kms) long course to beat the current mark of 376.8mph (605.70km/h).

During a practice run on 9 August, when the famous salt flats were not in optimum shape, Martin rode the 746kW Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner to a top speed of 441.1km/h - assuming a new fastest-ever speed for a Triumph by beating the previous mark of 393km/h set 46 years ago by Bob Leppan in the ‘Gyronaut X-1’.

On advice from FIM course manager Mike Cook, the team will fire-up again mid-September when the salt flats should be at their peak condition.

“While conditions were some of the best I have seen over the last few years, we feel there is still some room for improvement,” explained designer and crew chief Matt Markstaller, “When chasing a record such as this on two wheels the conditions have to be the very best they can be, to give us the greatest chance of achieving the speeds we require to set a new record.”

Powering the Infor Rocket Streamliner are two turbocharged Triumph Rocket 3 1.5-litre inline engines running on methanol fuel which deliver 746kW at an ear-shattering 9,000rpm.
