Toyota Recalls Another 119,000 Vehicles For Takata Airbags

The Takata airbag saga shows no signs of slowing, with Toyota the latest to issue another mass recall in Australia.

Around 119,000 vehicles are the latest to be identified as part of the ongoing program, with the carmaker’s Corolla, Rukus, Rav4, Echo and Yaris all on the list.

The lion’s share of the numbers for this latest Takata recall is the popular Corolla, with more than 106,000 on the list.

Of the 111,000 included in the latest round, the remainder includes just under 2000 Yaris examples and 3276 units of the boxy Rukus. All Corolla, Yaris and Rukus vehicles on the list were built between January 2010 and December 2012

As with other Takata recalls, the problem surrounds the airbag’s metal inflator unit.

Over time, the unit can absorb moisture and become brittle. As the airbag deploys when required during a collision, the unit can fracture - showering the vehicle occupants with potentially lethal metal fragments.

For the aforementioned Toyota trio, the recall will target the front passenger airbag.
