Toyota has confirmed it unveil the production version of its new RAV4 Electric at the weekend's International Electric Vehicle Symposium in Los Angeles.

First revealed as a concept at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show, the electrified SUV is the result of collaboration between Toyota and American electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla.

Details on the production model have yet to be revealed, but in concept form, the RAV4 EV features an electric drivetrain developed together with Tesla, including the motor and lithium-ion battery pack.

Production and supply of the electric drivetrain is expected to be managed by Tesla, with assembly to be completed at Toyota's Canada plant.

Toyota says the electric SUV will offer a driving range of around 160km from one charge - a figure that is generally par for the course in the EV game - and the car's overall weight is around 100kg greater than a regular RAV4 V6 petrol model.

While the concept's styling revealed a production-ready design, it remains to be seen if the RAV4 EV will get a new look when it hits showrooms.

It is also unclear what sort of volume Toyota is expecting to achieve with the RAV4 EV's sales, or whether a global launch is planned.

In 2011, 35 of the RAV4 EVs were built and leased to private and government fleets in the US as part of a pilot programme.
