Toyota In Tokyo: Hydrogen And Electric Concepts To Star

Toyota is set to take over next month's Tokyo Motor Show (the Toyota Motor Show?), with a handful of concepts and two new production models taking centre stage.

Already confirmed for a Tokyo unveiling is the final version of the Toyota FT-86 concept series, marking Toyota's long-awaited return to the rear-wheel-drive sports fraternity.

While the FT-86 represents the revhead side of Toyota's personality, the rest of its Tokyo line-up remains as green as ever.

What else is the big T planning?

FCV-R Hydrogen Concept

Toyota will preview its plans for a range of hydrogen-powered at Tokyo next month, kicking off with the FCV-R concept (Fuel-Cell Vehicle, pictured top of article).

The FCV-R packs its 70MPa high-pressure hydrogen fuel-cell unit in its underbelly, allowing room for four passengers while returning a driving range of 700km "under test conditions." 

At 4745mm long, the FCV-R is 285mm longer than the current third-generation Prius, 40mm wider at 1510mm. (We reckon it's all in the pumped guards.)

FT-EV III

The latest concept in Toyota's FT-EV range of electric technology studies will debut in the form of the FT-EV III.

Power for the new version - based this time on the carmaker's tiny iQ city car - is provided by an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery, offering an estimated driving range of 105km from one charge.

Fun-Vii

There's not much to know about the Fun-Vii at this point, but Toyota describes the concept as "a preview of future where people, cars and society are linked." We're not sure the world's not already there... 

Looking at the single teaser image here, the Fun-Vii looks to be a giant rolling screen, displaying images captured on a mobile device (such as your phone) and transferred to the vehicle's computer. We'll just have to wait and see.
