UPDATE: Three new images added to the gallery, this time of a more standard-looking red car.

The proverbial cat looks to have leapt well clear of the bag if these images of Toyota's upcoming FT-86 prove to be the real deal.

The images, purportedly of scanned pages from the Japanese market brochure for the new rear-wheel-drive sports coupe, surfaced at enthusiast forum FT86club.com this week.

If they are accurate, the images reveal that Toyota has stayed true to the overall look of its earlier FT-86 II concept. Only the softer front and rear light designs stand out as a noticeable departure from the concept's styling.

Shown here with a number of 'Modellista' styling extras, the production-ready coupe sits on large alloy wheels and a jutting front bumper design that draws more than a few styling cues from its concept progenitor.

Inside, the FT-86 cabin reveals an upright dash design - doubtless a hat-tip to the AE86 Corolla coupe, the Celica and countless other classic sports cars.

Toyota has revealed few technical details for the FT-86 (even its final production name is unknown), but with a Tokyo Motor Show debut set for December, the full story is not far away.

For now, we know that the FT-86 will be powered by a new version of Subaru's 2.0 litre naturally-aspirated Boxer engine, although power and performance figures have not been revealed.

It is also expected that the engine will benefit from Yamaha tuning and Toyota's D-4S direct-injection technology. Suspension is handled by MacPherson struts up front, and a double wishbone arrangement at the rear.

Watch this space for more details as they arrive.
