A few days after Toyota’s all-new compact SUV broke through at the Geneva Motor Show, the carmaker’s Australian arm has confirmed the model is headed our way.

Due to arrive early next year, the C-HR SUV will give Toyota a player in the booming compact SUV market, which saw sales grow more than 27 percent last year.

While the addition of a compact SUV to the line-up will come as little surprise to Toyota fans, the chosen powerplant for the new model could raise some eyebrows with Toyota opting for a turbocharged petrol engine.

Currently, the Toyota range in Australia is devoid of any turbocharged petrol engine so the C-HR will not only represent a new direction, it could attract a new type of customer to the brand.

The engine will be a 1.2 litre four-cylinder unit with direct-injection, making 85kW and 185Nm from just 1500 RPM.

Customers can choose from front- or all-wheel-drive configurations, matched with either a six-speed manual or CVT automatic transmissions.

Toyota says the CH-R will feature autonomous emergency braking as standard, along with a reversing camera.

"C-HR will expand Toyota's market appeal with its stunning design and superb driving performance - with powerful low-end torque and outstanding handling and agility - all while delivering impressive fuel economy," Toyota Australia’s Tony Cramb said.

The carmaker says its strong performance with SUV sales in other segments should position it well to succeed with the C-HR.

Both RAV4 and Kluger achieved their best-ever sales figures last year, while the Prado was Australia’s best-selling large SUV.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed for the 2017 Toyota C-HR. Stay tuned to TMR for more.
