Toyota has now passed 50,000 hybrid sales in Australia, some 13 years since the Prius badge first hit local showrooms.

In the years since the Prius hatch’s 2001 launch, Toyota Australia has bulked up its hybrid range with the light Prius c and the larger Prius V people mover, along with two generations of hybrid Camry sedans.

And it’s the Camry Hybrid that now leads the pack, making up 25,452 sales since 2010 - compared to 18,682 Prius hatch sales since 2001.

Rounding out the milestone, the Prius c and Prius v have achieved 4521 and 2016 sales respectively since arriving in 2012, for a total of 50,671.

The achievement comes nearly one year since the wider Toyota group hit the 50,000 mark, with combined Toyota and Lexus hybrid models reaching the milestone in April last year.

Globally, cumulative Toyota and Lexus hybrid sales passed six million in December, with the latest one million sold in just nine months.

Of that total, 2.8 million Toyota and Lexus hybrids have been sold in Japan, 2.3 million in the US and Canada, and 650,000 in Europe.

Hybrid options remain a distant third among the popular powertrains in Australia however, with just 11,949 - just 1.05 percent - of last year’s 1,136,227 sales made up of hybrid models.

Other hybrid offerings in Australia include Honda’s Civic Hybrid, Insight and CR-Z, along with Holden’s plug-in hybrid Volt, the new Mercedes-Benz E 300 Bluetec Hybrid and BMW’s ActiveHybrid 3, 5 and 7 models.
