Japanese giants Toyota and Mazda will reportedly team up to further the advancement of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, extending a partnership that already focuses on existing technologies.

Mazda in particular could benefit from the expanded agreement, as Toyota’s prepares its first hydrogen model - the Mirai - to enter the Japanese market.

Reuters reports that unnamed sources confirmed the pair were in talks to expand the partnership, aimed at fast-tracking hydrogen technology in the face of ever-stricter emissions laws.

Mazda could further benefit from the deal by accessing Toyota’s existing hybrid technology, as seen in its Prius range along with the Camry and numerous Lexus models.

In return, Toyota would have access to Mazda’s SkyACTIV efficiency technologies for internal combustion petrol and diesel engines.
