A start-up company called GomaVial believes it has found a solution to the world’s growing stockpile of used tyres.

They’re turning them into thongs - or more specifically - ‘TireFlops’.

That’s thongs in the Australian sense of course - the essential beach or everyday footwear comprising only a rubber sole and something else to hold it on your foot.

By cutting the sole from a length of discarded tyre no longer fit for use on a wheel, GomaVial believes it can not only cut down on waste but also improve the thong’s design.

Using tyre treads in place of conventional soles means TireFlops theoretically have the same properties that the tyre once had.
