Tesla boss Elon Musk has confirmed the all-new Model Y compact SUV is on the way but still a few years removed from launch.

So we will have Tesla Models S, 3, X, Y (the model 3 so-named because Ford has trademarked E) – we’ll leave you to work-out the alphabetical connection.

On Twitter, Mr Musk revealed that after Model Y, the company “should be inconsistent in our naming conventions”.

As for styling, Britain’s Auto Express is expecting the all-new compact SUV will follow the lead of the larger Model X (pictured, top of page) but will likely not run the ‘falcon-wing’ folding doors.

Mr Musk also confirmed the Model Y will sit on the Model 3 chassis while the larger Model X platform expands its use to underpin the upcoming Tesla electric pick-up truck and minibus.

Speculation points to an eight-seater initially which may arrive by the end of 2018.
