Indian carmaker Tata is on the scene again, following up its dimunitive Nano light car and the Pininfarina-designed Pr1ma with an all-new concept: the Tata Pixel.

Looking like any number of electrified Toyota, Mitsubishi or Honda concepts, the Tata Pixel is actually a diesel-powered city car designed with the European buyer in mind.

Power is provided by a 1.2 litre three-cylinder turbodiesel, assisted by a stop-start system and regenerative braking to return a fuel consumption figure of 3.4 l/100km - about on par with the Toyota Prius or MINI Cooper D.

As with the Nano, the engine is positioned beneath the Pixel's rear seat, giving the concept a rear-mid-engine layout.

The real trick to the Pixel, Tata says, is the "Zero Turn turoidal traction-drvei Infinitely Variable Transmission" which helps ultra-tight parallel parking in dense urban areas by turning the outside rear forward and the inside wheel backward.

With the front wheels turning at acute angles, the Pixel can manage a turning circle of just 2.6 metres.

Inside, the Pixel offers seating for four adults, while its infotainment system allows for key functions of the car to be controlled from a portable touch-screen display that docks with the concept's dash.

Whether the Pixel will makes its way to the road in some production form remains to be seen, but, at the very least, we could be looking at a preview of a next-generation Nano.
