Suzuki Australia has released a new Sport variant in its Grand Vitara line-up, celebrating the SUV's return to full production after a tsunami swept across Northern Japan in March.

Starting at $31,990 drive-away, the Grand Vitara Sport is available in five-door form only. Features include 18-inch alloy wheels, a new 'Bombora Aqua' seat trim, a new front grille design, silver roof rails and silver side fins.

The Sport is also fitted with Hill Hold Control and Hill Descent Control as standard equipment.

As with the entry-level five-door Grand Vitara, the Sport is powered by a 2.4 litre petrol engine producing 122kW and 225Nm of torque.

Fuel consumption is listed at 9.9 l/100km for the automatic model and 8.9 l/100km with the manual transmission.

“We remain on track for another record year and the Grand Vitara range – now boosted with the arrival of the outstanding Sport – is a vital part of our line-up,” Suzuki Australia General Manager Tony Devers said.

Suzuki Australia will be looking to the Sport variant, and the return to full production capacity, to half a sales slump for the Grand Vitara range. In September, just 168 were sold, compared to 313 for the same period last year.
