While development partner Toyota shows off its pre-production FT-86 II concept, Subaru has revealed its own unique concept of the shared sports car platform.

Focusing on the technology rather than the styling, Subaru's aquarium-looking 'Boxer Sports Car Architecture' concept shown at Geneva reveals its horizontally-opposed boxer engine and rear-wheel-drive platform.

With the same 2570mm wheelbase as its Toyota sibling, the Boxer Sports Car Architecture concept measures 4200mm long, 1770mm wide and 1270mm tall. Whether these dimensions will be kept by the production version of the concept however remains to be seen.

On the engine front, the story remains the same: exact power and performance figures have yet to be revealed, although Subaru has confirmed its new sports car will be driven by a 2.0 litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated boxer engine.

Suspension is handled by MacPherson type struts up front, and a double wishbone arrangement at the rear.

While Toyota's FT-86 sports car is a strong chance of making a local debut, Subaru Australia's Managing Director Nick Senior has been outspoken about the company's commitment to its all-wheel-drive ethos in Australia - leaving some doubt about a local launch for this rear-wheel-drive sports car.

Speaking with TMR, Subaru Australia's David Rowley has also been unable to confirm whether the new coupe will make its way to our shores.

Production for Subaru's new sports car is set for the first half of 2012, but how relevant that will be to Australian buyers remains to be seen.
