SsangYong has moved a step closer to debuting its all-new small SUV, with the unveiling of its updated XIV-2 concept at this week's Geneva Motor Show.

The Indian-owned Korean carmaker revealed its XIV-1 concept at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show, offering the first preview of its new Evoque-inspired compact crossover.

The new XIV-2 concept takes on a three-door form, with a simplified front-end and a rowdier backside.

The XIV-2 also features an open-top roof, utilising a fabric closure that draws back in a louvered style over the tailgate. (Cutting rear visiblity in the process...)

The XIV-2 measures 4166mm long, 1820mm wide and 1566mm tall, with a 2600mm wheelbase. It has been designed with a new pair of 1.6 petrol and diesel engines planned.

Late last year, SsangYong and new owner Mahindra hinted at new platforms and powerplants for its next-generation models, with both brands preparing to build a stronger reputation on the international stage.

Three new platforms are in the works, but apart from the XIV's eventual production offshoot, it is unclear which segments the new architecture will target.

“Work on a new platform should be concluded very soon, this will be on the compact side," A Mahindra spokesperson said.

"Right now it's in the styling and customer research stage and still has to clear the business case, to see if it's commercially viable. This will spawn products for both Mahindra and Ssangyong."

SsangYong is expected to flesh out its range with small and light cars, with the bulk of its international line-up consisting of SUVs, a pair of luxury models and a number of commercial vehicles.
